Tides are caused in oceans and seas mostly by gravitational pull of the moon, and to a smaller extent, by sun's gravity too.
The part of the ocean facing the moon bulges out. The part of ocean on exactly the opposite side of the earth bulges out too. So, as Earth turns, the ocean surface seems to rise and fall. Usually, there are two high tides and two low tides each day. There is a lot of energy in the movement that much water. This energy can be converted into electricity by wave turbine.
We can use tidal energy to supply electricity to our homes and businesses. However, the costs have been too high to make it a major energy sources till now.
